Vera
On the date

You had six things to talk about and used them all in fifteen minutes.

An average date runs about $205 and a whole evening. You get one run at it.

Run the same twenty minutes as many times as you like tonight for nothing, and find out where it dries up before it matters.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. First Date Conversation Practice, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

What she'll actually ask

She asks these the way a real person would, then follows up on whatever you say.

  1. So, how was your week?
  2. Tell me something about you that is not on your profile.
  3. What do you do for work? Make it interesting.
  4. There is a silence here. Fill it.
  5. What made you swipe right on me?
More about this one

Most first dates are decided in the opening stretch, before either person has relaxed. That is when the silences land hardest, when you fall back on interview questions, and when you either find a rhythm or spend two hours not finding one. Vera role-plays the opening of a first date over the phone so you can practice the transition from hello to actual conversation, try your go-to questions out loud, and hear which of your stories run too long before a real person has to sit through them.

What she listens for

Interview modeFiring questions without offering anything about yourself turns a date into a screening call.
Story lengthAnything past ninety seconds without a question back starts to feel like a monologue.
Silence handlingWhether you can let a pause sit or rush to fill it with anything at all.
  • first date conversation
  • small talk
  • conversation starters
  • awkward silence
  • dating nerves
  • coffee date
  • back-and-forth banter

“I discovered my 'interesting job story' was four minutes long. Nobody had told me. Vera just stopped responding until I noticed.”

Common questions

Is this weird?

Slightly, for about ninety seconds. Then it is just conversation practice, which is a normal thing to do for something you are nervous about.

Can it play a specific kind of person?

Yes — describe the personality in your prompt. A quieter date is the most useful practice, because it forces you to carry more.

How many times should I practice?

Two or three. Past that you risk sounding rehearsed, which is its own problem.

What if I am bad at it?

Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.

What if I do not know what to say?

She asks the first question and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.

What if it is awkward?

It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.
