Why speaking is the part that lags

Reading, listening and writing can all be practised alone. Speaking cannot, which is why it is almost always the weakest of the four and why people with excellent grammar freeze in conversation. The fix is not more study. It is reps, in a setting where being bad at it costs nothing.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.
