Why Portuguese is hard to speak
Portuguese learners often study a mixture of Brazilian and European material without noticing, then find that neither set of speakers responds the way they expected. The two varieties differ in pronunciation, pronoun placement, and everyday vocabulary enough that mixing them is a real handicap. Picking one and practising it consistently matters more in Portuguese than in most languages.
Common questions
Which variety should I learn?
Whichever matches the people you will speak to. The mistake is not choosing and absorbing both by accident.
Is European Portuguese harder to understand?
For most learners yes, because of vowel reduction. That is a listening problem more than a speaking one.
I speak Spanish — does that help?
Considerably, with a specific set of false friends and pronunciation habits to unlearn.
