Verbal Flashcards

Risk concepts, explained rather than recited.

Quantitative analysis and risk models drilled aloud.

You can compute VaR and not say what it fails to capture.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. FRM Part I Verbal Review, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

What she'll actually ask

She asks these the way a real person would, then follows up on whatever you say.

  1. What does this measure actually capture, and what does it miss?
  2. What assumption is doing the work here?
  3. What happens to this model in a fat-tailed distribution?
  4. How would you explain this to a non-quant?
  5. Why is that measure preferred over the alternative?
More about this one

FRM tests whether you understand what a risk measure means and where it breaks, not merely whether you can compute it. Candidates who study by working problems often cannot articulate the limitations, which is what the exam asks about. Vera drills the concepts verbally — what the measure assumes, what it misses, and what happens when the assumption fails.

What she listens for

Limitation awarenessComputing a measure without knowing its blind spots.
Assumption namingEvery risk model rests on assumptions that the exam probes.
Plain explanationIf you cannot explain it simply, the understanding is thinner than it feels.

Common questions

Can it do the calculations?

It walks the reasoning; do the numeric work alongside. The conceptual half is where verbal review pays.

Part I or Part II?

Both work. Name which in your prompt and the depth adjusts.

How does this fit with practice exams?

Practice exams for timing and format, verbal review for whether the understanding is real.

What if I am bad at it?

Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.

What if I do not know what to say?

She asks the first question and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.

What if it is awkward?

It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.
