Vera
Starting again

Two hours, a sitter, and a lot riding on it.

Practice for dates you had to arrange your whole week around.

You get one evening a fortnight. Spending it on a bad date stings differently.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. Dating as a Single Parent, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

What she'll actually ask

She asks these the way a real person would, then follows up on whatever you say.

  1. Do you have kids? Tell me about them.
  2. How does custody work for you?
  3. How does your ex feel about you dating?
  4. When would you introduce someone to them?
  5. What does your free time actually look like?
More about this one

Dating as a single parent compresses everything. The date costs a sitter and a week of logistics, so a mediocre one is expensive in a way it is not for other people, and the conversation carries questions others do not face — when to mention the kids, how much, and what to say about the other parent. Vera lets you practice those specific parts, at whatever hour you are free, which is usually after bedtime and not when a friend can help.

What she listens for

Kids as the whole answerThe date wants to hear about you as well, and that balance is hard to find in the moment.
Co-parent toneHow you describe them is heard as information about you.
Apology framingPresenting your availability as a problem you are sorry for.

“Twenty minutes after the kids went down was the only slot I had. That it was available at all is why I used it.”

Common questions

When should I mention my kids?

Most people say early and briefly — it is not a disclosure so much as a fact about your life, and treating it as ordinary helps.

How do I talk about my ex?

Neutrally and briefly. Practicing it once is usually enough to strip out the tone you did not know was there.

When do I introduce someone to my children?

Much later than dating advice implies, and it depends on your family. Worth deciding your own answer before someone asks.

What if I am bad at it?

Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.

What if I do not know what to say?

She asks the first question and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.

What if it is awkward?

It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.
