Starting again

The rules changed while you were away.

Practice for the first dates after a marriage, a long relationship, or a decade off.

You have not been on a first date since before dating apps existed.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. Dating After a Long Relationship, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

What she'll actually ask

She asks these the way a real person would, then follows up on whatever you say.

  1. So how long were you married?
  2. What happened, if you do not mind me asking?
  3. How long have you been dating again?
  4. Tell me about your life now.
  5. Do you have kids? Tell me about them.
More about this one

Dating after a long relationship ends is disorienting for practical reasons more than emotional ones. The format changed, the pace changed, and you have not introduced yourself to a stranger romantically in ten or twenty years. On top of that sits a question with no obvious answer: how much to say about the marriage, and when. Vera lets you have the first few of those conversations somewhere they do not count, including the part where they ask what happened.

What she listens for

“The first time someone asked about my marriage I talked for six minutes. Better that it happened on a practice call.”

Common questions

How much should I say about my divorce?

Less than feels natural at first — a short factual version, then forward to the present. The full story is a later-date conversation.

When am I ready to date again?

No universal answer, though a useful signal is whether you can describe the relationship without heat.

What about mentioning my kids?

Most people mention them early and briefly. Practicing that once makes it feel routine rather than loaded.

What if I am bad at it?

Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.

What if I do not know what to say?

She asks the first question and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.

What if it is awkward?

It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.
