Vera

The job is the first thirty seconds, four hundred times a week.

Practice the opener, the brush-off, and the voicemail — on your own time.

Nobody coaches you on the calls that get hung up. There is nothing to review.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. For SDRs & BDRs, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

Where to start

The calls that decide this job, in the order worth practising them.

What you're actually judged on

Prospecting is the highest-volume, lowest-feedback job in sales. A hang-up produces no recording worth reviewing and no coaching, so the same flawed twenty seconds runs hundreds of times a week unchanged. Most SDR improvement therefore comes from deliberate reps outside live calls, which is difficult to arrange with a manager who has fifteen minutes a week for you.

  • Meetings booked, and meetings that actually show
  • Connect rate and conversation rate
  • Whether your openers survive the first brush-off
  • How quickly you recover from a bad hour

Common questions

Will my manager see this?

No. This is your own practice — nothing is recorded to a team dashboard, scored, or reported anywhere.

How much practice actually helps?

Ten minutes before your calling block beats an hour on a Sunday. The effect is on the opener, which is where the job is decided.

Is this useful if I want to be an AE?

Yes, and starting on discovery early is what shortens that path.
