Week three is where this usually ends.

A call after each run, so the plan survives the first bad week.

The programme is free and nine weeks long. Almost nobody finishes it.

What Vera actually is

A phone call with someone who is not there. You say the thing out loud, they answer the way a real person would, and you get to do it again — as many times as it takes, with nobody listening.

1She calls youA real phone call, about ten seconds after you tap. Lock screen, headphones, car — wherever you take calls.
2She plays the other personNot a coach reading tips. Couch to 5K Check-Ins, with someone on the other end who answers back.
3She pushes when you are vagueFollow-up questions, interruptions when you ramble, and a straight read at the end on what landed.

“What if I am bad at it?”Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.
“What if I do not know what to say?”She asks first and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.
“What if it is awkward?”It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.

What she'll actually ask

She asks these the way a real person would, then follows up on whatever you say.

  1. Did you get out for the run?
  2. How did the intervals feel compared to last week?
  3. What stopped you on the days you skipped?
  4. Is anything hurting, or just hard?
  5. When is the next one?
More about this one

Couch to 5K fails at a predictable point. The first fortnight runs on novelty, then the intervals get longer, the weather turns, one run gets skipped, and the app sits unopened. Nothing about the programme is wrong — what is missing is anyone noticing whether you went. Vera calls after your scheduled runs, asks how it went, and treats a missed week as a normal thing to restart from rather than evidence you are not a runner.

What she listens for

Hard versus hurtingWorth separating early — one is the programme working, the other needs attention.
The skip patternWhich day gets missed repeatedly is a scheduling problem, not a motivation one.
Restart framingTreating a missed week as a total reset is what turns a gap into an ending.

“I had started Couch to 5K three times before. The difference was something asking me on Thursday whether I had gone.”

Common questions

What if I miss a week?

Repeat the last week you completed rather than restarting the programme. Most people restart from zero and quit for good the second time.

Should I be running faster?

Almost certainly slower. Beginners run their easy runs too hard, which is why week five feels impossible.

What if my shins hurt?

Pain that persists past a run needs a physio, not a coaching call. Vera will keep saying so.

What if I am bad at it?

Everyone is, on the first one. That is the entire reason it happens here and not there.

What if I do not know what to say?

She asks the first question and follows up on whatever you answer. You never start from a blank page.

What if it is awkward?

It is, for about twenty seconds. Then it is a conversation, and nobody heard the twenty seconds.
