4 things to practise

You know nobody, and it has been quiet for weeks.

Getting your conversation back, then getting out there.

Moving somewhere new costs you a social circle and, quietly, your practice at talking.

What this actually involves

Moving to a new city removes the two things that produce a social life: incidental contact and the daily practice of talking to people. The second one is the underrated part. After a few weeks of speaking to almost nobody, a first date is the most conversation you have had in a fortnight, and it shows early no matter how interesting you are. Fixing the rust comes before the dating.

The sequence

Roughly in order, though nothing here blocks anything else — start with whichever is next for you.

Common questions

How long does it take to build a social life somewhere new?

Longer than people expect — commonly six months to a year. Weekly repeated contact is what shortens it.

Should I date straight away or settle in first?

Both work, but if you have gone quiet for weeks, getting your conversation back first makes early dates go considerably better.

What if I am only here temporarily?

Worth saying early. It changes what people are looking for, and it is a much better conversation at date one than at date six.

Other goals

Not practising doesn’t save you anything.

The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.
