Forty matches, four replies, no dates.
Profile, openers, the pivot to meeting, and the first twenty minutes.
Most app conversations die of natural causes, in the app.
What this actually involves
App dating fails at three specific joints: a profile that gives nobody anything to reply to, openers that could have been sent to anyone, and conversations that never get moved off the app. Each is fixable and none of them is about being more interesting. The fourth joint is the first date itself, where being out of practice at talking shows in the opening minutes regardless of how well the messaging went.
The sequence
Roughly in order, though nothing here blocks anything else — start with whichever is next for you.
- FirstFix the profile before anything elsePhotos from this decade, and at least two prompts that ask a question back. Read your prompts out loud — anything that could sit on someone else's profile is doing no work. You do this one. Vera isn’t involved.
- Week 1Dating App Opener PracticeSay your openers out loud before sending them. Template tone and dead-end questions are obvious in a second and invisible in a text box.Practise this ↗
- Once matchedAsking Someone Out PracticeThe pivot from messaging to meeting. Most app conversations die here, from nobody ever making the ask.Practise this ↗
- Before the first oneDating Nerves PracticeSpend the worst run on a practice call. The nerves are worst on attempt one and noticeably weaker by attempt four.Practise this ↗
- First datesFirst Date Conversation PracticeThe opening twenty minutes, where the date is decided and where messaging fluency does not transfer.Practise this ↗
- ThroughoutHandling Rejection PracticeNot the moment itself but the fortnight after, where people quietly stop opening the app. That gap is the real cost.Practise this ↗
Common questions
How soon should I ask someone out?
Earlier than most people do. A conversation that runs for two weeks in the app usually ends in the app.
Is my profile or my messaging the problem?
Match rate tells you about the profile; reply rate tells you about the openers. Diagnose before rewriting both.
How many apps should I use?
Fewer, used properly, beats four half-maintained. The bottleneck is almost never the number of apps.
Other goals
Not practising doesn’t save you anything.
The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.
