The format changed while you were away.
Apps, first dates, and the question about what happened.
You have not introduced yourself romantically to a stranger in fifteen years.
What this actually involves
Dating after a long marriage is disorienting for practical reasons more than emotional ones. The apps are new, the pace is different, and there is a question with no obvious answer waiting in every early conversation. Most people find the first three dates are the hard ones and it settles after that — which is an argument for making the first three cost less.
The sequence
Roughly in order, though nothing here blocks anything else — start with whichever is next for you.

- Setting upDating App Opener PracticeIf apps are new to you, the opener and the pivot to an actual date are the two things that decide whether any of it goes anywhere.Practise this ↗
- Before the first dateDating Nerves PracticeThe nerves are worst on the first attempt and considerably weaker by the fourth. Spend the worst one on a practice call.Practise this ↗

Common questions
How much should I say about my marriage?
Less than feels natural. A short factual version early, then forward to your life now — the long version is a later-date conversation.
When am I ready?
No universal answer, though being able to describe the relationship without heat is a reasonable signal.
Do I have to use apps?
No, but if you do, the mechanics have changed enough since you last dated that practising the pivot is worth an evening.
Other goals
Not practising doesn’t save you anything.
The ticket, the evening, the weeks of applying — all of it is spent before anyone says a word. The practice is the only cheap part, and the only part that changes how the rest goes.
